Our Staff

Doctors

The doctors are highly trained, specialist general practitioners; there are seven full-time partners all of whom see patients in their surgeries as well as maintaining their individual responsibilities to the running of the Practice, and to the management of medical services in Wiltshire. The doctors undergo regular training, appraisal and revalidation in accordance with good practice. Although we are a large Practice, we are a friendly Practice; one advantage to our size is the opportunity for partners and other clinical staff to cultivate special interests, allowing us to share skills and opinions in more difficult cases. We believe this diversity of skills is to our patients’ benefit.

Nurses

The nurses are a critical part of the clinical team. All our nurses are fully qualified and registered in the UK and act in their own right as professionals, in accordance with the expectations of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. As well as running clinics in their own right they act as contact point for patients who need to discuss clinical issues. The work they undertake is essential to the smooth running of the Practice, and their clinical skills are appreciated by doctors and patients alike. All our clinical staff are fully trained, kept up-to-date, and are annually appraised in keeping with our Clinical Governance protocols.

Healthcare Assistants

The HCAs are specially trained to help with clinical tests and investigations, to perform ECGs (heart tracings) and spirometry (which measures lung function), urine tests, blood pressure measurements, and so on. We also have a specialist HCA who runs a wound-dressing clinic.

Phlebotomist

The main role of phlebotomist is to take blood samples. This is a highly responsible post because it requires considerable skill to get blood from a patient’s vein quickly and without too much discomfort. In addition, choosing the correct sample tube, the disposal of needles and other potentially harmful items, and the accurate labelling and packaging of the samples for transport to the laboratory are all necessary.

Practice Management

Donna Giddings

Practice Manager

I have worked in the NHS for over 40 years, my whole working life based on a nursing background predominantly in Primary Care. Over the years I developed my knowledge through formal education to work for the last ten years of my clinical life as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Formerly the Clinical Lead for the Surgery, the Covid pandemic saw my management, mentoring and teaching skills come to the fore and I realised how much I enjoyed this part of the role. Management restructuring at the Practice allowed me to gain promotion to Practice Manager; a role which I am really enjoying.

Martin Randall

Business Manager

After 30 years as a Manager in the Food industry, I decided it was time for a change of direction, which led me to the NHS and the Avenue Surgery, where I have been Practice Manager since January 2016. I lived in Warminster for 25 years before moving around the country, working for Geest Bananas, Vitacress Salads and other food processors. I also owned and ran a Pub/Restaurant in Yarlington Somerset, finally returning to Warminster in 2010. In 2021 as a result of the expanding business I became Business Manager.

Emma Murphy

Administration Manager

I have worked in the NHS since the age of 17, in Cornwall, Manchester and now here at The Avenue Surgery, where I have worked for over 12 years. I joined the Administration Team at the Avenue as a Medical Secretary in 2010, I was promoted to Senior Administration Assistant some years later. I was then promoted to Administration Manager, which is the position I hold now. During my time as Senior Administration Assistant I spent time with each person in the team, learning their role, so I could effectively assist and guide the team. I now manage a team of 12 people – the Administration Team are responsible for the registration of all patients at the practice, deductions of patients, scanning of correspondence into patient’s medical records, summarising medical records, private medical reports, copies of medical records, referrals and much more.

Practice Support Staff

Alongside the clinical staff at the surgery, we also have other support teams who contribute towards the smooth running of the practice. These consist of: A Reception Team who provide front-of-house service to patients and carers signposting them to the appropriate service required. An Administration Team who works behind the scenes to support patient services including prescription handling, referrals, managing clinical correspondence and finances. A Maintenance and Cleaning Team who are responsible for the day to day upkeep of the practice.
